The flickering occurred but the mac never dropped the connection. I connected the Nucleus back into the network and used its audio device list to select the dac 3b (which was still connected to the mac) and ran the same test on that setup. That does not happen when the mac mini is connected directly so it looks as if the other hardware has a ‘less strong’ connection to the dac usb input. The other noticeable thing is that the usb connection flickers, and sometimes a lot, as these rapid selections are made. So it seems that the problem is not with the dac but may be a more widespread issue with linux based OS’s like Nucleus and Id but having said that it was JRiver’s Mac OS based system which encountered problems today. I then ran the new ITunes set up - without any problems no matter what I threw at it. Created the same new library in JRiver on the same mac and ran into the same problem as before. Despite the program no longer need to install the software separate for playback and management of images, sound and video do not have. If you like to poke around to figure things out yourself and can use forums to get questions answered, JRMC is a great match for you. Like all applications there is a learning curve with JRMC if you want to take advantage of its powerful features, but it’s not the steepest. The combination of feature set, tablet remote control, and ease of use (compared to other apps) is unmatched. Even people who run other applications for specific playback needs frequently use JRMC in addition to the other apps. Based on my experience I believe JRMC is the audiophile standard most used by serious enthusiasts.
